What is the definition of an abdominal ultrasound?
Ultrasound testing comes in a variety of forms. Each one employs a probe that is designed to image certain bodily parts. An abdominal ultrasound visualizes organs and other soft tissues (such as blood vessels) within the abdomen (belly).
Abdominal ultrasounds provide images of structures and blood flow in the abdomen using sound waves. These ultrasound scans can be used to examine organs, tissues, blood vessels, and other abdominal structures.
Major organs in the abdomen include the:
- appendix
- the large and small intestine
- stomach
- gallbladder
- liver
- pancreas
- bladder
- spleen
